With reports of clashes between security forces and Kuki-Zo groups, Mallikarjun Kharge, the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, on Saturday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of having vested interests in the ongoing ethnic conflict in Manipur. Kharge's comments came after the Superintendent of Police (SP), M Prabhakar, was injured in a mob attack in Kangpokpi district on Friday evening, according to PTI.

The attack occurred following a shutdown call by the Kuki-Zo Council, which was protesting the deployment of central armed forces in the region. The protesters, angered by the presence of BSF and CRPF personnel in Saibol village, targeted the SP’s office.

In response to the fresh wave of violence, Kharge also questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi for failing to visit the troubled state since the conflict began. "Your last visit to Manipur was in January 2022, when you were seeking votes for the BJP. Violence broke out in the state on May 3, 2023. Over 600 days have passed, and media reports, including satellite images, now show that village after village has been destroyed," Kharge stated in a social media post.

"We repeat with the utmost responsibility that the BJP has vested interests in keeping the peaceful border state in turmoil, resulting in over 250 innocent deaths and the displacement of 60,000 people. Many are still living in camps, even after 20 months," he added.

Criticising Manipur CM N Biren Singh's comments expressing regret over the ongoing crisis, Kharge saidkabibe game, "Your incompetent and shameless chief minister has expressed regret but has conveniently ignored your absence from the state."
