The Hockey India League returns after a seven-year hiatus on December 28. The 2024-25 edition will kick off with the men’s tournament at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela on Saturday. (More Hockey News)

The men’s tournament will take place from December 28 to February 1, while the women’s event is scheduled from January 12 to 26.

As the teams gear up for over a month of action in Rourkela and Ranchi, competing in a double round-robin format followed by the knockouts, here's a look at how they shape up ahead of the season opener on December 28.

Hockey India League 2024-25: Format

The teams in the men's HIL are placed in two pools:

Pool A: Delhi SG Pipers, Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers, Soorma Hockey Club, Vedanta Kalinga Lancers.

Pool B: Gonasika, Hyderabad Toofans, Tamil Nadu Dragons, UP Rudras.

The men’s HIL will kick off in Rourkela, with Phase 1 spanning from 28 December to 18 January, where all eight teams will play against each other once. Phase 2, beginning on 19 January, will see the teams divided into two pools.

Each team will compete against others in their pool, with the top four advancing to the semifinals on January 31. The final is scheduled for February 1, 2025.

Hockey India League 2024-25: Squads And Preview Delhi SG Pipers

Goalkeepers: Pawan, Adarsh G, Rennie Benjamin.

Defenders: Joginder Singh, Gareth Furlong, Rohit, Jarmanpreet Singh.

Midfielders: Shamsher Singh, Thokcho, Kingson Singh, Ankit Pal, Manjeet, Ky Willot, Lucas Toscani, Raj Kumar Pal, Jake Whetton.

Forwards: Tomas Domene, Iktidar Ishrat, Koji Yamasaki, Aaditya Lalage, Sumit Kumar, Dilraj Singh, Sourabh Anand Kushwaha.

The Delhi SG Pipers have put together a strong squad, bolstered by key Indian players like Shamsher Singh, Jarmanpreet Singh, Raj Kumar Pal, and Varun Kumar. The highlight of their auction was the signing of Rohit, a standout defender from the Indian men's junior team, who was bought for Rs 40 lakh, just two lakhs less than Shamsher.

The team will be led by former Indian men’s team coach Graham Reid, with the legendary PR Sreejesh, who recently retired, stepping in as the mentor.

 Team Gonasika

Goalkeepers: Oliver Payne, Kamalbir Singh, Suraj Karkera.

Defenders: Tim Howard, Dipsan Tirkey, Sanjeep Nilam Xess, Birendra Lakra, Anmol Ekka, Yogember Rawat, Amir Ali.

Midfielders: Jacob Draper, Yashdeep Siwach, Jack Waller, Timothee Clement, Lee Mortan, Vishnukant Singh, SK Uthappa, Manpreet Singh (C).

Forwards: Nikkin Thimmaiah, SV Sunil, Struan Walker, Victor Charlet, Araijeet Singh Hundal, Mandeep Singh.

Team Gonasika boast a solid Indian core with key players like midfielder Manpreet Singh, forward Mandeep Singh, defender Birender Lakra, and goalkeeper Suraj Karkera. While the loss of forward Tom Boon is a setback, the team has brought in the exciting French forward Timothee Clement as his replacement.

Defending champion Lancers return as the only club from the previous HIL season. With a strong European core. The squad features top players like Enrique Gonzalez, Antoine Kina, and Alexander Hendrickx.

Indian goalkeeper Krishan Pathak strengthens the defense, while Hendrickx’s drag flicks are a major threat. Coached by Mark Hager, Lancers are strong title contenders.

Soorma Hockey Club

Goalkeepers: Mohith HS, Vincent Vanasch, Jashandeep Singh.

Defenders: Gurinder Singh, Ashu Maurya, Pradip Mandal, Nicolas Della Torre, Jeremy Hayward, Sukhvinder, Harmanpreet Singh (C).

Midfielders: Vivek Sagar Prasad, Ankush, Victor Wegnez, Prabhjot Singh, Sunit Lakra, Harjeet Singh, Nicolas Poncelet.

Forwards: Nicolas Keenan, Boris Burkhardt, Harish Somappa Mutagar, Phil Roper, Pawan Rajbhar, Gurjant Singh, Maninder Singh.

Soorma Hockey Club, based in Punjab, invested big in defense with a Rs 1.6 crore spend, the highest at the auction. Indian captain Harmanpreet Singh, known for his drag flicks, adds firepower to the squad. With experienced players like Vincent Vanasch, Vivek Sagar Prasad, and Gurjant Singh, the team is well-rounded. Belgian coach Jeroen Baart, former U-21 coach for Belgium, will lead the side.

Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers

Goalkeepers: Atal Dev Singh Chahal, Jamie Carr, Ali Khan.

One did not realise the enormity of this feat. Harmanpreet is basically a defensive midfielder in footballing parlance and to score 200 goals, is truly a great achievement.

Defenders: Jasjit Singh Kular, Gauthier Boccard, Sebastien Dockier, Rupinder Pal Singh (C), Jugraj Singh.

Midfielders: Sean Findlay, Yogesh Singh, Jaskaran Singh, Pardeep Mor, Affan Yousuf, Tim Cross, Poovanna CB, Atul Deep, Pardeep Singh Sandhu, Thounaojam Ingalemba Luwang.

Forwards: Florent Van Aubel, Same Lane, Gursewak Singh, Sukhjeet Singh, Abhishek.

While many teams focused on acquiring drag flickers, the Bengal Tigers made Indian forward Abhishek Nain their top pick. The team will be led by Colin Batch, the successful coach of Australia. However, the Tigers faced a setback when goalkeeper Pirmin Blaak, a Paris Olympic gold medallist, was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to injury.

UP Rudras

Goalkeepers: Pankaj Kumar Rajak, James Mazarello, Prashant Kumar Chauhan.

Defenders: James Albery, Lars Balk, Surender Kumar, Sunil Jojo, Kane Russell, Prashant Barla, Shardanand Tiwari, Priyobarta Talem.

Defenders: Akshay Ravindra Avhad, Mukul Sharma, Amandeep Lakra, Devindar Walmiki, Gonzalo Peillat, Arthur de Sloover, Jacob Anderson, Sundram Singh Rajawat.

Midfielders: Zach Wallace, Rajinder Singh, Darshan Vibhav Gawkar, Nic Woods, Rahim Aakib Sayyed, Maico Casella, Sumit, Nilakanta Sharma.

Hyderabad secured Germany's Gonzalo Peillat for Rs 68 lakh, making him the most expensive overseas player this season. Head coach Pasha Gademan, who helped Germany to a World Cup win and Paris Olympics silver, sees Peillat’s experience as key. The team also added Arthur De Sloover, Nilakanta Sharma, Sumit Walmiki, Nic Woods, Zachary Wallace, and Dominic Dixon.

Tamil Nadu Dragons

Goalkeepers: David Harte, S Senthamizh Arasu, Prince Deep Singh.

Defenders: Jip Janssen, Prince Deep Singh, Kothajit Singh, Anand Lakra, GM Pruthvi, Moritz Ludwig, Y Anand, Amit Rohidas (C).

Hockey India League 2024-25: Fixtures

The hockey matches will be played daily at 8:15 PM IST. On days with double headers, the first match will start at 6:00 PM IST, followed by the second match at 8:15 PM IST.
